Saturday saw Wife and I; Mr. and Mrs. Global Client; Mr. and Mrs. Sofa Gonk; and Mrs. and Mr. Fearless Leader dining together at Fearless Leader’s home.
What could have very easily turned into either an unremarkable episode of “Terry and June” (a series in which The Boss seemed to be expected for dinner on an almost daily basis) or a Mike Leigh play, actually played out very well. Fearless Leader has been very ready to talk about her home (almost as ready as she is to talk about her childhood in India) since the day I joined Global Agency – and having visited, I can see why. It’s beautiful: a Georgian house, just outside London, surrounded by a garden dominated by beautiful trees (in one case, a Mulberry tree planted during the reign of Henry VIII). If I lived there, I don’t suppose that I could ever motivate myself sufficiently to leave it and go off to the job that pays for it, but she seems not to have this problem, as she is almost always on a ‘plane somewhere.
Writing of which, I am on a ‘plane somewhere tomorrow, though I can’t remember where: I’m going with Fearless Leader and Sofa Gonk, so I daresay I’ll end up in the right place, but when I announced to the table that I was off to Singapore, it was met with a curt “Well, have a nice time. We’re going to Bangkok” from Fearless Leader – or at least, I THINK it was that way round. Perhaps if I just leave it at the fact that I am definitely going to Asia (because it takes 13 hours), that is safest…
