I DID think about being an agent, largely on the back of the “Bourne” trilogy of films. I tried to encourage both my wife and my colleagues to refer to me as “The Asset”, as in the film – but when that didn’t really tak off, I sort of lost interest. I might give it another go, but the problem is: when I get pissed, I can’t be trusted. So far, I’ve had nothing more disastrous to share than my views on Shakespeare, Rugby or the genius and beauty of my children – but if I were to be trusted with the safety and security of a nation, that would all change, and I can’t help thinking that the nation’s security ought to have a higher price than a bottle and a half of Claret.

I am in favour of No. 2 “Writer of Effortlessly Brilliant Comedy”. The problem with “Architect” is that once you get popular enough to design houses on the sort of scale you have in mind, you will run the risk of either (a) falling *out* with the Lady Wot Lunches whose banker husband is funding this or (b) falling *in* to bed with her. This can cause complications once the bill is submitted.
“Critic” seems a little too easy for you – we all know The Rules. If Fiona Shaw is in it, it’s “good” (mostly), if she’s not, then it’s probably crap and you’re better off staying in and watching the latest episode of Spooks.
Oh, MI5 agent might be fun, have you considered that?

Frustration with this situation is natural. There are lots of lovely opera directors who are in need of work. The clue here is the phrase “actor-turned-director”… if you are an Actor, you cannot shapeshift (ooo lookee, I’ve been watching that skin-flick) into a Director overnight and start walking around with a clipboard and worried frown, bossing people about all day. And what’s this about you filming in the East End? Please remove the camera, and get yourself in front of a real audience.

You must think me dreadful for abandoning you for so long, especially after you wrote such a fabulous review of JGB… (after some prompting…). My excuse: I’ve been up a Mountain. Yes, a real one. I’ll explain sometime. Meanwhile, you know our Lovely Lady is back from LA and directing Figaro, don’t you? Theatre? Nowhere to be seen – I *can’t* subsist on vampire skin-flicks for the rest of my life…. Alas, alack and oh fuck.
